(A) The Weights & Measures Act on 28th December 1957 and subsequent Amendments in 1988
This act was implemented by three well recognized and authorized agencies which are as follows:-
(1) BIS – The Indian Standards Institute (ISI) now known as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) with overall responsibility of preparing documentary standards for use in trade an commerce.
2) The Department of Weights & Measures, a regulatory body to enforce the Metric System throughout the country.
3) THE LEGAL METROLOGY ACT, 2009
4) NPLI –The National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi (NPLI) with overall responsibility for custody, establishment realization, maintenance, dissemination an upgrading national standards of physical measurement in India (www.nplindia.org)
(B) NABL– National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories
NABL has been established with the objective to provide Government, Industry Associations and Industry in general with a scheme for third-party assessment of the quality and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories.
Government of India has authorised NABL as the sole accreditation body for Testing and Calibration laboratories.
NABL also satisfies the requirements of APLAC MR001. NABL had undergone the peer evaluation by a team of APLAC members, based on which NABL qualified as an APLAC MRA (Mutual Recognition Arrangement) Partner as well as a Signatory to ILAC Arrangements.
(C) STQC – Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification
Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate is an attached office of the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Government of India, provides quality assurance servicesĀ in the area of Electronics and IT through countrywide network of laboratories and centres.
The services include testing, calibration, training and certification to public and private organizations. These laboratories are having national/International accreditation and recognitions in the area of testing and calibration.
Besides testing and calibration STQC has specialized institutions such as Indian Institute of Quality Management (IIQM) for quality related training
programmes. Centre for Reliability (CFR) for reliability related services and Centre for Electronics Test Engineering (CETEs) for skill based trainings.
(D) NTH – National Test House (NTH)
The NTH is the largest multi-location, multi-disciplinary industrial testing laboratory in India Industries, Institutions and Trade have been extensively using the unique infrastructure and expertise of NTH over the last eight decades.
This gives the NTH peerless and pioneering status in Industrial Quality Testing in India. NTH services are available across the country at Calcutta, Mumbai, Madras, Ghaziabad, Jaipur and Guwahati
